TL;DR: Google Business Profile (GBP) is a free listing that makes your business show up on Google Maps and in local search results. For tradespeople in Ayrshire, it's the single most effective thing you can do to get more enquiries. This guide covers exactly how to set it up and get the most out of it.

What is Google Business Profile?

Google Business Profile (previously called Google My Business) is your free listing on Google. When someone searches "plumber Kilmarnock" or "electrician near me", Google shows a map with three local businesses — the Local Pack. That's powered by Google Business Profiles.

If your business isn't listed, or your listing is incomplete, you simply don't show up. Competitors with complete, active profiles rank above you — even if you've been trading longer and do better work.

Step 1: Claim or create your profile

Go to business.google.com and search for your business name. If it already exists (Google often creates partial listings automatically), click "Claim this business." If it doesn't exist yet, click "Add your business."

You'll need a Google account. If you don't have one, create one using your business email address.

Step 2: Verify your business

Google needs to verify you're a real, local business. For most tradespeople, this means receiving a postcard with a 5-digit code sent to your business address. This takes 5–10 days. There are sometimes faster options (phone or video verification) — choose whichever Google offers you.

Important: Your verification address doesn't have to be shown publicly. If you work from home, you can hide your address and just show your service area — Ayrshire, or specific towns.

Step 3: Complete your profile properly

This is where most tradespeople stop short. A half-filled profile ranks poorly. Here's what to complete:

Step 4: Upload photos

Profiles with photos get significantly more clicks and calls than those without. Upload at least 10 photos to start:

Add new photos every month. Google rewards active profiles with better rankings.

Step 5: Get Google reviews

Reviews are the most powerful ranking factor in local search. A business with 20 five-star reviews will almost always outrank one with none — regardless of how long they've been trading.

The simplest approach: after every completed job, send your customer a WhatsApp message saying "Really glad you're happy with the work. If you have 2 minutes, a Google review would mean a lot — here's the link: [your Google review link]."

To get your review link: in your GBP dashboard, click "Get more reviews" and copy the short link. Save it on your phone so you can send it quickly after every job.

Step 6: Post regular Google updates

Google lets you post updates directly to your Business Profile — photos, job updates, offers, seasonal reminders. Businesses that post regularly rank better than those that don't. Aim for at least 2 posts per month. Keep them short: a photo, 2–3 sentences, and a call to action ("Call us for a free quote").
